John Henry Faber was born on 13 February 1918 in New York City, New York, to John Martin and Jennie F. Faber. He studied journalism at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, from 1937 until 1941. While at the University, he worked for the UA News Bureau and freelanced for The Birmingham News (Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama).
